| Summary | "Cars are getting larger, with sports utility vehicles (SUVs) now making up around half new car sales in Europe and globally. This proliferation of oversized vehicles is of concern because of their multiple associated harms, including in relation to road danger, carbon emissions, air pollution, resource use and crowding out other road users. In view of these harms, various cities are considering policies to discourage oversized vehicles via higher parking charges. This report examines the advantages and disadvantages of using different metrics to define ‘oversized vehicles’ for this purpose, recognising that the best choice will vary according to a city’s aims, circumstances and data availability." |
